Interview: Chad Lafferty on Coffee for Closers
We had the honor to be featured on Brad Corbet’s “Coffee for Closers“ interview series for Motionworks Careers. Motionworks Careers is an “interactive platform for working professionals to develop their careers and learn about what types of companies and opportunities are available here in Japan.”
In our 3-part interview Wahl+Case Managing Director Chad Lafferty covers a wide range of topics including startups in Japan, our shift to remote work, the recruitment industry and our hiring policies.
Part 1: Supporting Tech Startups in Japan
In part 1 of our interview, Chad talks about his role as the Managing Director at Wahl+Case, our different brands and how we support tech startups in Japan.
“It’s usually a pretty big learning curve for companies and what we commonly see is the first year or two they kind of get it wrong. And that’s where a company like ours, our experience we can consult on those kind of aspects to help them understand, what their different strategies might be.”

Part 2: How Wahl+Case Made the Shift to Going Remote
In part 2 Chad talks about Wahl+Case’s shift to a remote first company during the Covid-19 pandemic. He reflects on the barriers to remote work as well as all the challenges we had and are still facing, both physical and mental challenges.
“The other side is the mental side. And this is something that we’ve noticed, and I’ve personally noticed. You’re much more susceptible to burnout because you’re always like ten feet away from your home office, right?”

Part 3: The Importance of Culture in Recruiting
In the last part, Brad and Chad speak about the recruitment industry and how it was affected by Covid-19. They also cover the importance of hiring the right people, training and creating a cohesive culture at Wahl+Case.
“Actually, I’m stealing this from a client of mine, but they said they have a strict ‘no asshole policy’, and I was like ‘that’s a great policy to have’.”
